Fees
.
Solicitors charge for their services in a variety of ways. Some areas of work can be charged on a fixed fee basis, such as conveyancing or will drafting. Personal Injury work is often done on a "no win no fee" agreement. As a rule family law solicitors charge per hour for the work undertaken although some specific items of work, such as a change of name deed or a divorce petition, may be charged on a fixed rate.
Hourly rates are monitored by the court service although they are actually set by the individual solicitors themselves.
Solicitors' bills are checked by the court service in a number of situations, such as when a party is legally aided or when an order for costs is made and the paying party challenges the amount of the fee.
The court service keeps a record of the hourly rates it deems reasonable for a solicitor to charge categorised geographically.
If you would like to see the rates for the country please click here.
For Stockport and outer Manchester the guidance on hourly rates for a solicitor with at least eight years litigation experience is £183 per hour plus VAT.
I have recently lowered my hourly charging rate to reflect recent reductions in overheads. My hourly rate is now £100 plus VAT reduced from £150 plus VAT. This reduction takes effect from 19th January 2007. All work done prior to that date is charged at the higher previous rate of £150 plus VAT.
All hourly rates are subject to review at leat once per year. More details are available on average divorce costs and some fixed charges if you click here .
